The Usborne Book of Greek and Norse Legends by Cheryl Evans ~ This was the first dedicated book on mythology that I read as a little kid Like with the Scary Stories series the art stayed with me a long time As I read Gaimans Norse Mythology I kept remembering reading this book as a kid comparing the little differences in tone and story book manages to stay pretty true to the myths while not being super explicit with the er less savory bits
